Since the changes to AEWV on April 7, 2024, many holders of this visa type have been affected. This article outlines newly added conditions and considerations for those holding AEWV skill levels 1, 2, 3 (such as Chef, Nail Technician, Painter) seeking to extend their visa to 5 years.
Newly Added Conditions for AEWV balance for Skill Levels 1, 2, 3 Holders:
- You need at least 3 years of relevant work experience or a university degree or higher. The university degree can be from Vietnam or another country, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be directly related to your current job position.
- If you only have a sub-degree qualification, it must be related to your current job and evaluated by NZQA.
Calculating Work Experience: Experience from previous visa applications is still counted. For example, if you have demonstrated 2 years of relevant experience in a previous AEWV application, you only need to demonstrate an additional 1 year of relevant experience in NZ to meet the 3-year requirement.
Considerations for Choosing the Timing to Submit Balance Application:
- Approval Process: Immigration NZ typically starts processing AEWV extension applications when the current visa has less than 9 months remaining. Submitting your application early means it will wait for processing, but you must pay the fee at the time of application.
- Criminal Record and Health Check: You should check if these documents are still valid at the time of application. A previously submitted criminal record is valid for 24 months. If you wait until your visa is nearing expiry, you may need to prepare a new criminal record.
- Current policy: New Zealand’s immigration policies are constantly changing, so you should consider applying as soon as possible to avoid being affected by new policies.
- Employer Accreditation: Your employer must maintain accreditation throughout the time your application is submitted until it is approved.
Submitting Applications for your Partner and Dependent Children
- You can submit applications for your Partner and Dependent Children. However, their applications will only be processed after the outcome of your application.
- Their applications will be assessed under the current policy, even if policies change later.
- Conditions for your Partner Visa: Their visa conditions may change from open work to work with conditions.
