New Zealand Student Visa Financial Proof Guide

Student visa financial proof - BeVisa

On top of tuition fees, INZ needs to see that you have enough money to live on throughout your stay in New Zealand. Funds evidence is one of the most common reasons for follow-up requests, so getting it right from the start really pays off.

Minimum financial requirements according to INZ

  • Tertiary, English language, or non-compulsory courses: NZD $20,000/year (or NZD $1,667/month for courses under 1 year).
  • School students (Years 1–13): NZD $17,000/year (or NZD $1,417/month).

These living funds must be completely separate from tuition fees. Additionally, you must provide a return ticket (or a ticket out of New Zealand) or demonstrate additional funds sufficient to purchase one.

Requirements for source of funds

INZ not only checks your current balance but also verifies the legitimacy and availability of the funds. You need to prove:

  • Legitimacy: Where the money in the account comes from (income from salary, business, sale/lease of real estate, or accumulated savings).
  • Availability: The funds must be genuinely available for you to withdraw and use while living in New Zealand.
  • Transaction history: Avoid depositing a sudden large sum into the account right before submitting the application without clear supporting documents explaining its source.

Not sure your funds evidence is strong enough? BeVisa is happy to review it with you before you apply. 🎓
