Short-Term Graduate Work Visa — 6-month option after study

From Monday 16 November 2026, INZ starts accepting Short-Term Graduate Work Visa (STGWV) applications. It is a high-level option for international students who have finished (or are finishing) study in New Zealand but do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV): six months of open work rights to look for a job and, where suitable, move on to an AEWV.

A few useful points:

• Apply within 3 months of when your New Zealand student visa expires; applications open from 16 November 2026.
• NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification, full-time study of at least 24 weeks in NZ; not an English / foundation / bridging course; and you do not qualify for PSWV.
• You generally need at least NZD $5,000 for living costs; health checks / chest X-ray may apply depending on how long you plan to stay.
• STGWV is open work — you can work for most employers. It does not by itself lead to residence.
• If you may qualify for PSWV, check that pathway first — STGWV is aimed at graduates who do not meet PSWV rules.
