Student Visa — apply early for your study start date

If you are preparing to study in New Zealand, a Student Visa often takes longer to process than you expect — especially in peak season. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) recommends applying about 3 months before your intended travel date so you have a better chance of getting a decision in time for your programme.

A few useful points:

• Processing times change by week and by education provider type (university, polytechnic/ITP, PTE, school). Check the latest INZ wait-times table before you book flights.
• Peak periods often fall around November–March and June–August. Applying close to your start date risks missing your study schedule.
• You can start with a conditional Offer of Place; before a visa is granted you usually need an unconditional offer.
• Very early applications are sometimes approved in principle, then you top up with fee-payment confirmation / study arrangements closer to the start date.
• Lodging a complete set of documents from the start helps avoid delays — missing key documents can lead to decline or longer processing.
